ST. BERNARD GIRLS BASKETBALL
For Lady Saints, the sky is the Limit
Adam Bavar is making a big jump this season in girls basketball. After helping out with the youth league girls teams at Good Hope, he will be making the transition to the varsity level as he takes over the girls program at St. Bernard.
Bavar has not been on the job long, but he likes what he has seen out of the girls on the team so far.
"They are looking pretty good and we've got some good players in key positions," Bavar said. "We've got a center in Natalie Kelley that I think has the potential to be an All-State selection, and we have a couple of pretty good guards in Jordan Burt and Brittany Schaeffer."
"I don't expect there to be much of a change from youth to varsity because I did a lot of fundamental teaching with the young players and there will be some fundamental teaching with this team as well."
Bavar said the Lady Saints will be a young team with only two seniors.
"That's one thing that really has me excited is the number of underclassmen," Bavar said. "The juniors and seniors have shown a lot of leadership and that will help us be better this year."
"The girls have been coached well in the past years and bring plenty of ability to the team to start with."
Bavar said he does not know much about the teams the Lady Saints will face in area play yet, but he is getting help from athletic director and former Lady Saints coach Ray Heitmueller.
"Coach Heitmueller has told me things to look for from each team that we'll face, and he helped me out a lot when planning what to do with the team," Bavar said. "I didn't know much about my own players, so I came to a few volleyball games with him and he pointed out who all played and where last year."
"He has been a big help, and I plan on learning more about some of our opponents by traveling around and getting a look at the before we play them."
The Lady Saints will get a good look at an area opponent quickly when they open the season at home next Friday against Mount Hope.
