SHADES MOUNTAIN CHRISTIAN 34
ST. BERNARD PREP 20
Saints end season winless; fall to Shades Mountain Christian in final game
Preston Fuchs had 203 yards and a touchdown on 36 carries for the St. Bernard Saints in the final game of the season, but it was not enough to overcome a 34-14 loss to the Shades Mountain Christian Eagles Friday night.
Hunter Hackworth had a good night under center for the Saints with three completions in six attempts for 62 years and three carries for 33 yards, before getting injured early in the fourth quarter.
Shades Mountain opened the game with an onside kick and recovered the ball on the Saints 45-yard line, St. Bernard’s defense held tough and forced the Eagle to turn the ball over on downs at the 2-yard line.
St. Bernard was able to move the ball out to its own 40-yard line before being forced to punt. Dennis Mynatt was able to force the Eagles into a fair catch at the 30-yard line.
The Eagles proceeded to drive the ball 70 yards to score in seven plays. Kyle Nation carried the ball in for a 19-yard score and the extra point by Mattew Nall put the score at 7-0.
St. Bernard answered back, eating almost three minutes off the clock and pounded out 62 yards to tie the game. Hackworth stepped back and threw the ball in the direction of Daniel Spaulding.
An Eagle defender tipped the ball and it found its way into the waiting arms of sophomore Jake Killebrew for a 21-yard pass reception. The extra point by Mynatt was good.
Shades Mountain added another score on a 52-yard pass from quarterback David Reeves to Joshua Scherbarth, and the Eagles led 14-7 at the half.
The Eagles added three more touchdowns to up their margin to 27 points, before St. Bernard would get into the scoring column.
Fuchs plunged in from one yard out with 7:57 showing on the clock. St. Bernard had plenty of opportunities to score, but was unable to muscle the ball down the field.
St. Bernard had the ball four times on the Shades Mountain side of the field, but could only manage the one touchdown. Two fumbles and twice failing to convert on fourth down ended any scoring chances.
Spaulding had two receptions for 41 yards and Killebrew one for 21 yards and a touchdown.
